Think of Western medicine as "fire department" it is excellent for emergencies, acute cases, trauma, and life saving interventions.  TCM is more like a "gardener", it focuses on the soil (internal environment).  It ensures the roots are strong and the system is balanced so that diseases don't take hold in the first place.  TCM has been known to tackle chronic cases.  Both TCM and Western medicine are vital and work best when they support each other.

Cupping therapy uses gentle suction to improve circulation, relieve muscle tension, and reduce pain.

It is often used for back, shoulder, and neck tightness.

What do cupping marks mean?

Cupping may leave temporary circular marks on the skin. These are not bruises they are a sign of increased blood flow and stagnation being released. Generally, darker the mark, the more stagnation or tension was present in that specific area.

They usually fade within a few days.

It can described as a "Tight Pull" or "Deep Pressure" sensation.  It can feel intense for the first minute or so, especially in the very tight areas of the muscle.  However, the sensation turns into a warm relaxing feel as the muscles begin to relax.

What are the different types of cupping?

There are mainly 4 kinds...
  1. Stationary: Cups placed on specific points.
  2. Sliding: Oil is applied to the skin and cups are moved across the muscles
  3. Fire: A cotton ball is soaked in alcohol then lit and briefly placed in a glass cup to create a vacuum suction.
  4. Flash: Cups are repeatedly applied and removed quickly to stimulate a specific area.

Who should avoid cupping?

  • People with areas with active skin inflammation, sunburns, open wounds
  • Extremely fatigued

Herbal Medicine Questions

What are herbal formulas?

Herbal formulas are natural blends of herbs used in traditional Chinese medicine to support healing from the inside out.

At The Akupuncture Clinic, we provide customized herbal formulas based on your condition.

What are decoctions?

While many people are familiar with "steeping" tea (infusing leaves in hot water), a decoction involves simmering tougher plant materials—like roots, bark, seeds, and dried fruits—over a longer period to extract their deep medicinal properties.

What forms do the herbs come in?

Herbs can come in many forms; Decoctions, Granules, Topicals, etc...
Are there any side effects?
TCM herbal formulas are remarkably safe. However, because they are "functional" (meaning they cause a change in the body’s physiology), some patients may experience mild, temporary adjustments:
  • Due to being "new" to your body it can cause loose stools, bloating, or a slight change in appetite as the gut adjusts.
  • Some herbs can be quite bitter or earthy, some patients may experience slight nausea if they are sensitive to strong flavors
  • Some formulas may make you feel more alert, or mild drowsiness.
The most significant side effect is interaction with western medication (like blood thinners or blood pressure medications).  FULL CONSULTATION IS VITAL

Although rare some people may be sensitive to specific plants. If you develop rash, hives, or itching, you should stop the formula and contact your practitioner immediately.

How is Herbal medicine different from supplements?

Vitamins and Minerals supplement a specific deficiency (like Vitamin D). Herbal medicine is a formula that can contain many different herbs that work together. For example, some address the main symptom while supporting the digestion.

Do they taste bad?

TCM herbs have complex flavors.  They can be bitter, earthy, pungent, or sweet. However, it also depends on the form of the herb; decoction, granules, etc...

Can I take herbs with my prescription medication?

Many formulas can be used alongside prescription medicine. HOWEVER, transparency is key! your practitioner will check for potential interactions. For example, some "blood-moving" herbs should not be taken with blood thinners.

Are herbal formulas safe?

Yes, when prescribed properly, herbal formulas are safe and effective. We carefully select formulas that match your needs and health condition.

After Treatment Questions?
