It's Definitely Not just a Cramp.... Maybe Sciatica?

Okay you had a long day at work, to blow some steam you go workout and all of a sudden you feel this sharp stabbing pain in your lower back.  You try to stretch it out and massage it, but you also feel this radiating pain going down the back of your leg.  You decide to to go home and that pain is still there and you are probably telling yourself "its just a cramp" it will get better after some sleep.  As you make yourself cozy you feel this sharp pain in your lower back and shoots down your leg with this tingling or numbing sensation.  At this point you know that "its not just a cramp... its definitely something worse".

Pain in your lower back and having tingling sensations in your leg is a common sign for sciatica.  So what is going on here?

What is Sciatica?

When someone says "I think I have sciatica?", this usually refers to some irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve.  To let you know, the Sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body! An issue here can be felt throughout your body.

It usually starts in the lower back and travels down your hip and into the legs and common causes can be...
  • Tight Muscles
  • Disc Issues
  • Poor Posture
  • Repetitive Strain
  • and more

You Tried Everything

After your restless not you realized that this is not a simple cramp.  To alleviate the pain you did some stretches, get a heat pack... even a cold pack, massage it out.  It might relieve some pain, but it creeps back.

That's one of the frustrating things about sciatica...it lingers...it is here to stay. And that's because it's not just about the nerve. It involves muscle tension, inflammation, and restricted movement.  Everything around the sciatic nerve is tight and irritated.

In Different View...

So far you read that sciatica is caused by the muscles compressing on the sciatic nerve hence the irritation.  In Eastern Medicine,  pain like sciatica is often viewed as what we call Stagnation.

What is stagnation? It sounds exactly as how you think,  under Merriam it is defined as

"stagnant state or condition a state or condition marked by lack of flow, movement, or development"

In Eastern Medicine, it can be viewed as "things are not moving the way they should"  and if things are not moving the way it should, it can cause slow downs or even blockages.  When circulation is blocked the body can feel...
  • Tight
  • Stiff
  • Painful
