Why Menopause Affects Your Sleep?

If you have been going through menopause and finding it harder to sleep, you are not imagining it.

You might have noticed that you have trouble falling asleep, waking up in the middle of the night, or waking up feeling tired.

It can really feel frustrating, especially when you are already tired.

So... What's actually happening?

Why Does My Sleep Get Disrupted During Menopause?

Well first, What is Menopause? In simple terms, it is the natural and permanent end of menstruation and fertility.  You might experience; hot flashes, irregular periods, night sweats.

So what does that have to do with sleep?  Menopause brings hormonal changes that affect your estrogen and progesterone levels.  These hormones help with thermoregulations, which is why you experience hot flashes. On top of that you might have higher stress levels and anxiety which further makes it difficult for you to fall or stay asleep.

Different way to understand what's happening (TCM View)

In a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) viewpoint, many menopause symptoms are understood as a type of "Yin Deficiency".

Lets not get too technical, a simple way to think about it is: Your body has a natural ability to cool, calm, and settle itself at night. As the body goes through menopause this "cooling system" can become weaker.  and when that happens the body starts to feel
  • Warmer than usual
  • Night Sweats
  • Hot Flashes
This "Internal Heat" in your body is what's keeping you up at night

Very Similar Perspective

We showed that in Western Medicine and TCM have a similar description, just in different languages
  • In Western view, it is a drop of hormones that affect temperature regulation
  • In TCM it is the loss of the body's cooling and calming balance
In both cases the result is very similar...

"The Body is Having a Hard Time Regulating Itself"

Lets Bring That Thermostat Down

We kinda went over what happening, now I know what you are thinking... "What can I do about it?"
Remember that the goal here is not to "knock you out" or force yourself to sleep. Your goal is to help your body feel more balanced so that your sleep comes naturally.

How does acupuncture help?

Acupuncture is used to help your body relax and regulate itself. The treatment are focused on:
  • Calming the nervous system
  • Reduce that heat feeling
  • Help the body calm or settle at night

Lets add Herbal Formulas for ongoing support

Along with acupuncture lets add a more consistent, day to day support.
We create custom herbal formulas based on what you are experiencing...
  • Night sweats
  • Difficulty falling asleep
  • Waking up frequently

Why both acupuncture and herbal medicine?

We just read that both offer similar benefits, so why use both? What you need to know is that both support the same goal but work in different ways.

Acupuncture is more immediate! Helps body relax, improve circulation, and support body's response in the moment.  Which is why it is helpful for stress, tension, sleep.

Herbal Medicine works more gradually (time heals). It gives support between acupuncture treatments, helping your body adjust and rebalance over time.

You can visualize as...
  • Acupuncture helps "reset" the body during treatment and...
  • Herbal medicine helps "maintain and support"
  • Both needed to complement each other!

Why Customization Matters?

Earlier you read that, our herbal formulas are made specifically for you! You might ask yourself, if I have menopause and the person also suffers from menopause shouldn't we take the same treatment methods?

In many cases, treatment is focused on the immediate symptom.  If you have an headache, you might take something to reduce that pain.  However, if the headache keeps coming back... then... you got to ask yourself, "Alright, what's causing it?"

Going back to menopause.  Symptoms like night sweats, hot flashes, trouble sleeping can show up in similar ways, BUT the root, the underlying pattern, may be different from person to person.

You might struggle with falling asleep, but the next person might not struggle falling asleep, rather wakes up frequently.  these symptoms might be related, but what your body needs can be different!

Treatments are based on how your body is responding as a whole, not just one symptom.  That's why...
  • Acupuncture points may vary from person to person
  • Herbal formulas are adjusted over time
  • Treatments evolve as your symptoms change

Want to sleep better?

Let's be honest, you probably tried many methods to help with your sleep. The results were kind of the same, maybe helped a bit, maybe it worked for a time being.  Now you trying to find a better solution!

Menopause is a natural transition, but no one wants to deal with the constant fatigue and restless nights. We are here to help you through it!
