Why Stress Shows Up in the Body | Acupuncture & TCM Perspective

When you or your loved ones feels stressed, what does that entail...? Usually people think stress as a mental issue.  You know, feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or mentally exhausted.  We all been there, but what people aren't aware of is that stress just doesn't stay in the mind.  Eventually it creeps its way down spreading itself across the body.

Stress can become Physical

Have you been so stressed that you experienced at least one below...

  • Tight shoulders
  • Poor Sleep
  • Fatigue
  • Digestive discomfort
  • Headaches
  • Jaw Tensions
You body and mind are constantly communicating with each other and when your body is under stress it shifts into a more alert and reactive state.  Kind of like entering survival mode.  If this stress continues unchecked and the physical symptoms keep showing up it can have long term affects.

Over time this can affect your Sleep, Digestion, Muscle Growth, Energy Levels, and Hormonal Balance.

Stress is normal
but staying in a constant state of stress for long periods of time can and will affect the body's' functions.  the body is simply overwhelmed and is struggling to regulate itself.

In Eastern Medicine
Stress is viewed as a disruption an interruption in the smooth movement and regulation of the body.  If you read our previous blogs, then you know the importance of Qi (if not click here). We can think as stress as this blockage that prevents smooth flow of our bodily functions.  When this stress build ups it creates...
  • Tightness
  • Stiffness
  • Irritability
  • Restlessness
  • Fatigue
All this is commonly described as stagnation or simply put things are no longer moving smoothly.

Stress Spreads quick
As I mentioned earlier, stress spreads throughout the body and it can affect more than just one part of the body.  Which is why you might experience headaches and digestive issues or fatigue and poor sleep.  The body's system is all interconnected and when one area becomes overwhelmed the other system will respond as well.

How does Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine Fit In
Acupuncture focuses on helping your body relax, regulate, and return to a more balanced state.  Many Patients describe feeling more relaxed, less tense, and feeling rested.  Treatments help the body swift away from the constant stress and tension.  However, the reality is that stress isn't always temporary, becomes part of our daily lives.  Which is why herbal medicine is provided to provide a consistent and ongoing support between acupuncture treatments. Herbal Medicine can help with...
  • Sleep
  • Digestion
  • Muscle Tension
  • Fatigue
You might have noticed that the signs stated above for both acupuncture and herbal medicine don't target stress itself.  You probably also heard or read from somewhere "Acupuncture for stress" or "Herbal Medicine for stress relief".  The thing is stress comes from our everyday activities , acupuncture and herbal medicine aren't going to magically remove your bills, responsibilities, bill, or even the traffic from your commute.  What it actual does is to address how your body responds to the stress.  The goal is not eliminate stress completely, but to help the body handle stress in a healthier way.

Stress is here to stay
The truth is, stress is unavoidable these days...

Work, family, friends, responsibilities, finances, lack of sleep, endless stimulation,  I want money, but I dont want to work.  All this adds up and quick

In our modern life, stress will always be our companion, following alongside our shadow.  The problem isn't about experiencing stress, its about when the body finally says enough.

When the body is under constant stress and for too long without giving it enough time to recover and reset, that tension will eventually show up physically, hindering our already tough lives.
